Trump Threatens to Kill NAFTA - Again

Donald Trump says he'll terminate Nafta

Trump, along with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and outgoing Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto signed a new pact succeeding more than a year's debate. And he rejects President Trump's contention their new trade agreement is final.

The leaders of Mexico, the United States and Canada sign the "new" NAFTA in Argentina. Talks for a NAFTA refresh began in 2017 under threats by Trump that he'd quit NAFTA if he didn't get a better deal, so Saturday's comment so the president, effectively, come full circle.

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue was pleased an agreement had been reached. Mr Trump had told lawmakers he would veto any bill that did not include US$5 billion for a southern border wall, raising the prospect of a partial government shutdown.

Trade experts have long suspected Trump, who has made beating up on NAFTA a central feature of his political career, might play the termination card in an effort to light a fire under the deal's critics.

Shortly after Friday's signing, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer insisted that the deal was negotiated with bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans, and expressed confidence it would survive the congressional approval process.

In an interview with CNN on Sunday, he said, "We can go back to the table with the Mexicans and the Canadians and do stronger labor standards".

"I don't see how they get this ratified by Congress", Toomey said.

Two other Democratic Senators, Mark Warner of Virginia and Sherrod Brown of OH, fell short of a commitment to back the agreement on Sunday.

The MP also pointed out that the ongoing tariff tiff with the Trump administration has not been dealt with, an issue that affects the auto industry and manufacturing in the Windsor-Essex area.

Trump hailed it as "one of the most important, and largest, Trade Deals in US and World History" on Twitter shortly after the signing ceremony.

Now that the leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico have signed the agreement, it needs ratification from legislators in all three countries before taking effect.

Business Roundtable, an influential association of leading US companies' executives, also called for a "prompt resolution" of the tariff issue between all three countries while reviewing the final text of the new trade agreement.

Rubio's office said Monday that the senator had asked Lightizer to look into additional trade actions to protect Florida growers, and that Lighthizer had committed to requesting a fact-finding investigation and taking corrective action.
