Seven missing after US military aircraft 'mishap' off Japan

US Marine aircraft suffer 'mishap' off Japanese coast, search-and-rescue underway

Search and rescue operations are underway off the coast of Japan for a U.S. Marine Corps KC-130 refueling tanker and an F/A-18 fighter jet involved in a mishap, according to the Marines.

The incident, which involved an F/A-18 and a KC-130 that took off from Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, happened about 2 a.m. during "regularly scheduled training", a Marine Corps statement said.

The Marine Corps offered little information in a statement about the incident.

The Marine Corps has punished two aviators who flew their aircraft deliberately to draw a giant penis in the skies over California's Salton Sea. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing.

The Maritime Self-Defense Force, which dispatched aircraft and vessels to join the rescue operation, said Japanese rescuers found one of the crew members in stable condition.

Rescue operations are underway off the coast of Japan for survivors of an aviation "mishap" during a training exercise, according a statement by the USA marines.

There were five personnel on the C-130 and two on the F-18. Officials said the information was provided by the USA side.

More than 50,000 US troops are based in Japan under the bilateral security pact.
