Customers have vented their frustration at not being able to access the internet on their phones.
It said: "Our technical teams are investigating reports of issues when using data". After many complaints, O2 said they were hard at work finding the source of the issue, and later identified a problem with a third party supplier. This drop in service will also affect services that use 02's network including GiffGaff, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, LycaMobile and TalkTalk.
'We fully appreciate it's been a poor experience and we are really sorry'.
The Telegraph confirmed that some customers of these other networks were also affected by the outage.
They wrote on Twitter: "We are aware our customers are unable to use data this morning".
The company has 25 million customers across the United Kingdom.
The first issues were reported at around 5.30am on Thursday.
Earlier, O2 said it suspended planned work or updates to its systems and network.
"While it's positive that voice calls are still up and running, without a projected timeframe for a fix, this is likely a worrying situation for a large proportion of O2's some 32 million United Kingdom customers". According to two people directly involved, an issue relating to software in the systems provided by Ericsson has been identified.
The network outage isn't just forcing British mobile users to put down their phones and talk to one another.
The technical problem left millions of workers without access to emails and news on their morning commute and enraged those who wanted to access social media. Work is now ongoing to fix the fault and customers are being encouraged to use wi-fi where possible.
