OneBlood searches for extremely rare blood to save two-year-old Florida girl

Worldwide Hunt for a Rare Blood Type 2-Year-Old Needs Blood From Donors Who Are 100% Pakistani Indian or Iranian

Zainab, 2, is a Miami-area girl, battling Neuroblastoma.

Donors must have an A or O blood type, be of Pakistani, Indian or Iranian descent, and have the same missing antigen - or Zainab's body will reject the blood.

In order to meet the said pre-requisites, the blood donation organisation has chose to expand its search across the globe with an aim to raise 7-10 donors to donate blood over the period of Zainab's treatment.

Her parents' blood is not compatible, said the child's father Raheel Mughal.

A worldwide search is underway to find a donor with an incredibly rare type of blood needed to help save a 2-year-old girl in Florida.

The child's red blood cells don't have an antigen called Indian B. So the donor should have O or A blood type with the same missing antigen.

The problem is that Zainab has a rare blood type.

The non-profit blood donation organization OneBlood launched a campaign in a bid to find people who can donate blood to Zainab Mughal.

"The possibility of us finding a compatible donor for this little girl within the right ethnic group we want to screen is less than four percent", says Frieda Bright, OneBlood's Reference Laboratory Manager.

"We will definitely need more blood", Mughal said.

And even within this population, fewer than 4 percent of people are missing the antigen.

So far three donors have been found, including one in England, but doctors estimate they will need at least seven to 10 people continuing to contribute throughout the course of Zainab's treatment.

Donors must reach out to OneBlood in advance to ensure the additional compatibility testing is performed.

Visit www.oneblood.org/zainab for more donation information. So far, more than 1,000 local donations, as well as donations from other parts of the country have been tested and no additional matches have been identified.

"My daughter's life very much depends on the blood", Mughal said, describing the plea for help as a "humble request" from his heart.

OneBlood is now working in tandem with other blood centres and American Rare Donor Program to find a flawless blood match for Zainab. The hunt has now turned global with OneBlood, a not-for-profit organisation that procures blood and blood products, joining in the search.
