Trump Says Heather Nauert Will Replace Haley as UN Ambassador

Trump To Nominate Heather Nauert As UN Ambassador White House Officials

Trump also said he would make a personnel announcement concerning the Pentagon on Saturday, telling reporters outside the White House, "It will have to do with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the succession".

If confirmed by the Senate, the former Fox News anchor would replace Nikki Haley.

Speaking to reporters as he left the White House, Trump called Barr "one of the most respected jurists in the country" and "a terrific man, a terrific person, a brilliant man".

On the other hand, while mostly toeing the administration's line at the state department lectern, she has spoken out strongly in support of journalism, at a time the president has referred to the press as the "enemy of the people", and called for accountability for the massacre of Rohingya civilians by Burmese forces while the administration dithered over whether to call the mass killings a genocide.

A key question with Nauert, 48, will be whether the president keeps the United Nations envoy job as a cabinet-level position, or downgrades it to report through Pompeo, as other administrations have sometimes done. Haley insisted that she be made a member of Trump's Cabinet and his National Security Council to bolster her power within the administration. She also would be going up against foreign counterparts like the United Nations representatives from Russian Federation and China, who each have decades of experience in diplomacy.

Much of the initial reaction to Nauert's appointment concerned itself with her extremely limited foreign policy background, and the possibility that her main credential was her experience as anchor on Trump's very favorite television show, Fox & Friends.

Others, including former USA ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, criticized the choice. "It looks probable that the US will aim to marginalize the United Nations for the rest of Trump's term, in contrast to the Haley era".

Haley announced in October she would be leaving the job by the end of the year. Her trusted relationship with Trump was clear when he hosted an Oval Office farewell for her and she vowed to campaign for him in 2020.

Additionally, there were rumors at the time that Dina Powell, former deputy national security advisor, would take the role, but she dropped out of consideration. But since Republicans will continue to hold a majority in the Senate when the new Congress convenes in January, experts say she is likely to be confirmed. She's also close to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Trump's announcement comes just a day after the USA lost a high-profile vote in the U.N. General Assembly for a resolution condemning the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

But the most high profile criticism of Ms Nauert came after she gave the example of the D-Day landings as evidence of a longstanding relationship between Germany and Washington. The somber mission appeared to be forgotten as Nauert posted a tourist-style photograph of herself smiling in Riyadh.

She hadn't specialized in foreign policy or global relations. Barred from traveling with Tillerson, she embarked on her own overseas trips, visiting Bangladesh and Myanmar previous year to see the plight of Rohingya Muslims, and then Israel after a planned stop in Syria was scrapped.
