Apple is building a new $1 billion campus in Austin

Apple unveiled plans Thursday for a $1 billion campus in Texas that will create jobs for the tech giant outside Silicon Valley

Tech giant Apple announced it would invest in a new campus on Thursday, which - unlike Amazon's very public search-it had been planning in an under-the-radar process for months.

Earlier this year, Apple announced its intention to invest more than $30 billion in capital expenditures over the next five years in the U.S. This comes amidst tensions over proposed tariffs.

Early this year, the iPhone maker said that it would invest more than $30billion in the U.S. over the next five years, taking advantage of President Donald Trump's tax reforms. The capacity is then expected to grow to 15,000, making Apple the largest employer in the city.

Apple will build a $1 billion campus in Austin, Texas, break ground on smaller locations in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, California, and over the next three years will expand in Pittsburgh, New York and Colorado.

The company also plans to expand to over 1,000 employees in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City each, while "hundreds" of new jobs will be added in Pittsburgh, New York, Boulder, Boston and Portland, Oregon. The city is already home to the second largest number of Apple employees outside its headquarters in Cupertino, California.

From the looks of things, Apple is working to keep its word of creating more jobs in the U.S.by expanding its domestic operations. Apple predicts its Miami office will double in size.

Austin is one of the fastest-growing USA cities with a population of almost 1 million, and is home to the University of Texas and other tech companies including Dell Technologies Inc in nearby Round Rock, Texas, and IBM. It will be less than a mile from existing Apple facilities.

Apple's lengthy blog post about the expansions went into some detail on the new Austin campus-it will be located in North Austin and it will occupy 133 acres. Apple shares rose less than 1 percent to $170.29 this morning in NY.

"This shows that a business-friendly state not only offers low taxes and competitive incentives, but is also welcoming to all workers", Straus said.

Abbot praised the tech giant as one of "world's most innovative companies" and a creator of jobs in his state. "From our point of view, we didn't want to create this contest, because I think what comes out of that is you wind up putting people through a ton of work to select one, so that is a case where you have a victor and a lot of losers". Each site will get 25,000 jobs. The company, in its release, specifically mentioned that its data centers in North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada are all now being expanded.

Contrasting Amazon, which cited finding and recruiting a talented workforce as a reason behind its new location decisions, Apple said talent was not confined to certain geographical locations.
