CenturyLink outage takes down several 911 emergency services across the US

Century Link service disruptions continue but ‘911 calls are completing,’ company says

The outage only affected wireless 911 call, not landline calls. The company said the mysterious "network element" issue impacted service at 15 of its data centers, across both Europe and North America.

CenturyLink said it "discovered some additional technical problems as our service restoration efforts were underway".

Widespread outages across the country have been reported since earlier Thursday morning.

Law-enforcement and county officials are advising residents to have alternate emergency numbers on hand just in case.

USA officials and at least one state said Friday that they have started investigations into a nationwide CenturyLink internet outage that has disrupted 911 service.

CRESA said it received reports from first responders in the field about individuals who were not aware of the outage or how to reach 911.

CenturyLink has said little about the outages, but did state that 911 calls are completing in areas where CenturyLink is the 911 provider.

"We apologize for the inconvenience w/ multiple alerts", CRESA tweeted. The outage has continued into Friday, prompting FCC chairman Ajit Pai to issue a statement calling for an investigation into the company's response.

"Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", he said.

Police departments in Cleburne, Corsicana, Frisco, McKinney and Stephenville also reported 911 outages persisting through Friday morning. "I've directed the Public Safety and Homeland Security bureau to immediately launch an investigation into the cause and impact of this outage". It provided no other details, including how many customers were affected. Pai added that he has been in direct contact with CenturyLink to emphasize the urgency of restoring service and will be monitoring progress closely.
