Partial Federal Shutdown Unlikely to End This Year

The House and Senate on Thursday both adjourned until next week after pro forma sessions that lasted less than three minutes

Because of the partial government shutdown - which went into effect a week ago - President Trump canceled plans to spend Christmas in Florida, and stayed at the White House.

Last week, the Senate unanimously approved a spending bill with no funds set aside to build a wall.

"The Democrats are refusing to even sit down at the table" for a new round of talks, the White House official alleged.

Trump says $5 billion is needed to extend and improve border barriers along the Mexico frontier.

And yet, somehow, the government has been (partially) shuttered for six days now - and the Democrats have yet to surrender.

And he added: "Nancy Pelosi, in fairness, does not have the votes for speakership yet".

"At this point, it looks like we could be in for a very long-term shutdown", the North Carolina Republican said on CNN's "The Lead with Jake Tapper".

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Thursday, 47 percent of Americans hold Trump responsible for the shutdown, while 33 percent blame Democrats in Congress.

Russian Federation claims to have hypersonic, nuclear-capable missiles ready for deployment
Addressing his government on Wednesday, Putin announced that his military had successfully conducted a test of an intercontinental "Avangard" missile system.

Over the weekend, Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, said the White House had made a counter-offer to Democrats on border security.

And in another sign the coming talks with Pelosi will be as much about his political future than anything else, he used another tweet to warn another migrant caravan is forming in Central America and to again threaten to cut off USA aid to Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.

The president took to Twitter Thursday morning to express his incredulity, writing, "Have the Democrats finally realized that we desperately need Border Security and a Wall on the Southern Border..."

In a series of tweets, President Trump announced that his administration could be forced to seal America's U.S. -Mexico border if "obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the wall and also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our country is saddled with".

The shutdown is idling hundreds of thousands of federal workers and beginning to pinch citizens who count on some public services.

After sitting for just a few minutes following a break for Christmas, the almost empty Senate adjourned until 10:00 am (1500 GMT) on Monday and was to continue budget deliberations only next Wednesday, which will be the 12th day of the shutdown.

"We continue to believe that it is unlikely that Congress will come up with a deal to end the current partial shutdown until well into January", financial firm Height Securities said in a commentary note on Wednesday.
