Amazon has record-breaking festive season

The crash happened only in Europe with Amazon devices working properly with Alexa in the U.S. with no complaints from the customers.

Amazon today announced a record-breaking holiday season thanks to its customers all around the world, with more items ordered worldwide than ever before. Apple and Google still have a long way to go before they can catch up to Amazon because Siri and Google Assistant are lacking many features when compared to Alexa.

It was a record holiday season for smart home devices on Amazon.ca with the Amazon Smart Plug, Teckin Smart Plug, and PHILIPS Hue White A19 Bulb as the best-sellers.

Marketers will want to note Alexa's peformance this season as a positive arbiter of things to come for voice, as well as the Internet of Things (IoT) this year. Amazon Storytime also saw a rise in popularity. Among the top sellers were Amazon devices including the all-new Echo Dot, Fire TV Stick 4K with Alexa Voice Remote and Echo.

Christmas morning wake up weather
In the foothills, some rain is anticipated after 4 p.m. on Monday , Dec. 24, with the heaviest precipitation occurring overnight. It will stay cold on Friday , as well, with a high temperature of only about 10 degrees, but dropping to 11 below zero at night.

Amazon also reported that "tens of millions" of people either started free trials or begun paid memberships this holiday season for its subscription service, Amazon Prime, in an effort to take advantage of free shipping.

With so many people presumably receiving an Echo smart speaker on the holiday, the servers in Europe became overloaded and Alexa was not working. Prime hit 100 million subscribers in April this year. Amazon's Alexa was the most popular app in the US on Apple's App store Wednesday, meaning lots of devices were likely activated on Christmas Day. (Amazon did not immediately respond to an email about the reported outage.) While Amazon is notorious for keeping hard numbers under lock and key, it did say the number one Alexa request this year was "Alexa, turn on the Christmas tree". As a Christmas gift, a lot of people got Alexa or Amazon's Echo Dot 2 wireless speakers. Are you surprised by the popularity of Amazon's Alexa?

Shipments of Blink- and Ring-branded first-party smart home devices did not quite hit the expectations, but they, in addition to the smart home machines sector widely, were more as compared to a year ago, Amazon claimed.
