Los Angeles Times Chicago Tribune among newspapers hit by cyberattack

Computer virus hampers San Diego Union-Tribune's Saturday delivery

The online editions of the news organizations were not affected, and Tribune Publishing said no data about its subscribers was compromised. That newspaper cited individuals with knowledge of the situation in reporting that the attack appeared to be a form of ransomware.

Computer malware attacks on infrastructure, while relatively rare, are hardly new.

Newspapers are suffering enough without being the target of a cyber attack.

The Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune, which were sold by Tribune Publishing this year but still share production platforms with their former parent, said they were also affected.

The West Coast editions of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal were also impacted, as they are produced by the Los Angeles Times printing facility, the Times reported. But according to the Times, the companies still share some software and systems.

The West Coast editions of the two NY papers are printed at the same Los Angeles printing facility as the L.A. Times. The Tribune's remaining publications include its flagship, The Chicago Tribune, and newspapers in Florida, Hartford, Connecticut, and Maryland. Tribune owns the Chicago Tribune, the Baltimore Sun, the New York Daily News, the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, and other newspapers across the nation.

Missing from Tribune's statements were any details about the nature of the malware or evidence for its assertion that the attack originated overseas.

A malware attack that appears to have originated outside the USA delayed the hardcopy distribution of several major newspapers, according to a report.

Even if the attack was the work of foreign hackers, that does not necessarily mean it was backed by a government.

Spokeswoman Hillary Manning said the paper has been working to fix the issues but added that Sunday deliveries may be affected as well.

A cyberattack caused major printing and delivery disruptions on Saturday at the Los Angeles Times and other major U.S. newspapers, including ones owned by Tribune Publishing Co such as the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun.
