Trump Prepares For A New Fight Over Border Wall Funding

Democrats have more tangible reasons for thinking that: polls which show (a) the public blames the shutdown on Trump more than on congressional Democrats, and (b) Trump's motive for refusing a deal, his border wall, continues to be unpopular. He also pointed out that Democrats have supported the idea of a wall in the past despite their claims that it is outdated technology.

Donald Trump's outgoing chief of staff on Sunday admitted the president's planned wall along the United States and Mexico border would be more like a fence, as he gave his final interview before leaving office.

Before leaving, he gave a rare interview to the LA Times, published on Sunday, in which he called the role a "bone-crushing hard job".

"To be honest, it's not a wall", Mr Kelly said, adding the mix of technological enhancements in the President's new preferred design resulted from conversations with law enforcement professionals on the ground.

"But only saying "wall or no wall" is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border".

"I campaigned on Border Security, which you can not have without a strong and powerful Wall", he said.

After canceling a vacation to his private Florida club, Trump spent the weekend at the White House. The Republican-controlled Senate is very unlikely to take up any bill that Trump hasn't preapproved, so the shutdown will drag on. Under the terms Graham sketched out Sunday, young undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S.as children, as well as those fleeing disaster- and war-torn countries who hold indefinite visas, could be temporarily protected from deportation in return for wall funding. He also said the compromise should include changes in federal law to discourage people from trying to enter the U.S. illegally.

"I think the President's eventually going to win his court case regarding DACA and the President has put on the table several times relief for the DACA population".

House Speaker-Designate Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday that on Thursday, the House would vote on a series of measures that would reopen the government.

Trump reversed course after Fox News and radio talk show hosts ridiculed him for caving on his campaign promise to build a border wall.

"It's not a fence, Jeb, it's a WALL, and there's a BIG difference!"

Trump on Sunday tweeted that Democrats "left town and are not concerned about the safety and security of Americans!" "We're going to do the responsible thing".

Trump raised the stakes on Friday, reissuing threats to shut the U.S. -Mexico border to pressure Congress to fund the wall and to cease aid to three Central American countries from which many migrants have fled.

"I know there's some Democrats out there who would be willing to provide money for wall/border security if we could deal with a DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) population", said Graham.

Trump has been excoriated by opposition Democrats, who oppose his demand for $5 billion in border wall funding, after he blamed them for the deaths of two Guatemalan children in USA custody in a tweet on Saturday.

Democrats under Nancy Pelosi are all but certain to swiftly approve the two bills, making good on their pledge to try to quickly resolve the partial government shutdown that's now in its second week.

Kelly described an administration in chaos on his arrival to the White House last summer.

Republican Rep. Walter Jones has said lawmakers shouldn't contribute to the national debt when coming up with a compromise for the border wall funding.

Democrats brushed off the White House's attempt to cast blame. Senior adviser Kellyanne Conway accused Democrats of fixating on Trump's description of the wall, calling the impasse "a silly semantic argument".

Because Republicans only have 51 seats in the Senate, they need at least nine Democratic senators to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to pass legislation in that chamber.
