NYC Mayor Announces Health Care Coverage For All New York City Residents

Bill de Blasio

"New York City will begin guaranteeing comprehensive health care to every single resident regardless of someone's ability to pay or immigration status, an unprecedented plan that will protect the more than half-a-million New Yorkers now using the ER as a primary provider", writes NBC New York.

The initiative, dubbed NYC Care, will guarantee physical and mental health care for all 8.6 million people living in NY, de Blasio said at a press conference Tuesday at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx. In this city, we're going to make that a reality. And we have now in New York City something that we can build on.

'NYC already has a public option, ' he tweeted. Medi-Cal, the state's health insurance program, now will let illegal immigrants remain on the rolls until they are 26, up from 19, according to Newsom's new agenda.

He said despite efforts to fully implement Obamacare, there are 600,000 city residents who lack insurance, including undocumented persons who can not access federal benefits.

The city will spend $100 million on the program, The New York Times reported. The plan will cost "at least $100 million annually at full scale", the press release noted.

"We are saying the word guarantee because we can make it happen", the mayor added, emphasizing that the program would be unprecedented in the United States.

He also said that no new taxes would be issued to pay for the plan, noting that "we're going to pay for" this "through our public health care system because we're making it a priority". He argued that preventative care and access to primary care doctors will cut down on emergency room visits.

"People from all over the country are going to flood into NY to get their free health care", Thiessen said, adding that he had advice for taxpayers in the country's largest city who will foot the bill. However, de Blasio believes it will ultimately save the city money by drastically reducing residents' trips to the emergency room.

"There's a smoothing that occurs when you take a group of people who are getting very expensive care much later than they should, and that is a huge burden on the healthcare system", he explained.

The mayor made the announcement during MSNBC morning program, 'Morning Joe'. The panel concluded, in the words of a Newsday editorial, that "for patients, emphasis would be on primary care instead of hurried emergency-room sessions and days of hospitalization". "And we're doing that here in this city".

He joked that if they did leave town, they should use the Trans-Hudson commuter train to get their "free health care" without worry. We'll put the money in it to make it work.
