Republican rebellion against Donald Trump's border wall shutdown stance gathers pace

US President Donald Trump repeated his demand Tuesday for $5.7 billion to fund a wall on the border with Mexico, describing a "growing crisis" of illegal immigration hurting millions of Americans.

"However, we hoped the 8-minute time constraint coupled with the unlikelihood of the President going off-script would keep the total number of false statements low".

He said: "He asked Speaker Pelosi, 'Will you agree to my wall?' She said no".

He claimed there was "tremendous Republican support" for his stance, insisting it was his political opponents, the Democratic Party, and not his own side that was feeling the pressure.

"I asked him to open up the government", Schumer said. Trump's desire for a wall between the United States and Mexico was a central theme of his 2016 presidential campaign. Now Democratic leadership including House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer are demanding that the networks follow Trump's address with a rebuttal by Democrats.

"Just because you say it's a crisis doesn't necessarily make it one", ABC White House correspondent Cecilia Vega said following the president's address.

"Again, we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn't get his way", Schumer added. "That is sad and unfortunate". "But he does want us to believe there is a crisis at the border beside the one he created". Lindsey Graham joined Hannity to suggest Trump's stand represents the best chance to improve border security. "We have different views".

Trump says U.S. , N.Korea 'negotiating' on location for next Kim summit
President Trump said last week that he had received a "great letter" from Mr Kim, although he did not reveal its contents. A special North Korean train has entered China, raising speculation that Kim Jong-un could be on his way to Beijing.

Hoping to demonstrate flexibility during his almost 10-minute speech from the White House Oval Office, Trump said of the border barrier he wants built: "At the request of the Democrats it will be a steel barrier and not a concrete wall". Vice President Mike Pence told reporters that Trump is still considering that option.

On Tuesday, Trump gave a televised address in which he made the case for a border wall, saying the situation is a "humanitarian crisis - a crisis of the heart and a crisis of the soul".

This was the third meeting at the White House between Trump and congressional leaders over the impasse.

But there was no indication the legislation would be brought to a vote in the Republican-held Senate, much less signed by the president. And on "Fox and Friends", the judge stressed that a border wall would have to be funded by Congress whether Trump likes it or not. 'What are we going to build? She lamented the "collateral damage" to federal workers living paycheck to paycheck who may not be able to pay their bills as the shutdown drags on.

Other "essential" employees are being required to report to work, but without pay for the time being.

"The women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge - a challenge that President Trump's own cruel and counterproductive policies have only deepened".
