Jets looking at Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator

Mike McCarthy

WFAN host Joe Benigno expressed anger at the Adam Gase hiring, showing little faith Thursday morning on air in the former Dolphins coach who was sacked by the team with a losing record after three seasons.

Gase replaces Todd Bowles, who was sacked after he went 24-40 in four seasons and no playoff appearances. McCarthy made his intentions clear, according to ESPN, saying that he only wanted to coach the New York Jets in 2019 and since he won't be getting that job, he's going to wait for 2020 before seeking another gig.

A source confirmed to The Athletic that the 40-year-old will become the 19th head coach in franchise history.

A New York Jets helmet is held behind a player's back during the national anthem before NFL action against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium before the game on September 25, 2016 in Kansas City, Missouri. Gase was the Broncos' offensive coordinator during Manning's record-breaking 2013 season.

Player of the game: Baker Mayfield
Mayfield also dropped a flawless 38-yard strike over the shoulder of Antonio Callaway on the four-play drive. Baltimore leads the series 29-10 and is 18-3 against the Browns under Harbaugh, who took over in 2008.

The Jets had reportedly been interested in hiring Baylor head coach Matt Rhule. Injuries and personnel errors doomed the Dolphins, and they were never close to contention in Gase's tenure again.

Ultimately, with other teams calling about Kitchens' availability and the Browns exhausted of waiting on McCarthy, they made the decision to promote their interim offensive coordinator.

Gase will work closely with general manager Mike Maccagnan, who was retained by team chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson, to put together a competitive roster around Darnold.
