Driver crashes trying 'Bird Box' blindfold challenge

Layton police say a 17-year old drove blindfolded while doing the ‘Bird Box’ challenge. It didn’t end well

No injuries were initially reported, Fox 13 reports.

"Bird Box Challenge while driving...predictable result". Police say the young woman in question had pulled her hat over her eyes while she was driving, which resulted in the crash.

Based on the hit Netflix horror starring Sandra Bullock, the social media challenge involves participants taking part in tasks while wearing a blindfold, emulating characters in the film who must evade sight-targeting monsters.

A teen driver attempting a new and risky fad inspired by a Netflix movie caused a crash earlier this week, Layton Police say.

The department shared two photos on Twitter - the gray truck the 17-year-old girl was driving while blindfolded, and the white SUV she hit.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the crash just north of Salt Lake City in Utah, US.

"It's just inexcusable to do something as risky as this, not only to yourself but everyone else on the road", said police Lt Travis Lyman, quoted by KSL.com.

The streamer previously issued a warning against participating in the "Bird Box Challenge", which involves performing often unsafe stunts while blindfolded.

The popularity of the challenge even prompted Netflix to issue a warning against unsafe behavior.

The challenge "really hasn't been that risky, but inevitably somebody's going to do the monumentally stupid thing that is driving while blindfolded", a Colorado State Patrol officer said in a video message. Police are recommending charges of reckless driving.
