Alert Bus Driver Rescues Crying Baby Wandering Barefoot Near Milwaukee Freeway

Milwaukee bus driver Irena Ivic rescued a young child she spotted wandering a freeway overpass

Surveillance video from the bus shows Ivic's view of the boy as he ran over a freeway overpass.

Irene Ivic rescued a baby who was walking barefoot and alone on December 22, 2017.

Irena Ivic spotted the child on an overpass around 8 a.m on December 22 past year, officials said yesterday during an award ceremony.

In the video, Ivic, a mother of two, can be heard saying, "I'm shaken".

According to authorities, the toddler was discovered to be less than a year old and it's believed the mother, who may have been suffering from mental health issues, may have left the boy outside.

Another passenger brought her jacket up to the front of the bus to help the boy warm up. Authorities eventually reunited the boy with his father.

A look of concern covers Ivic's face in the video when she first sees the infant meandering along the sidewalk of the highway overpass near 4th and Mitchell streets. She carried the baby to the bus, where passengers gathered in disbelief. "I used to be a teacher and I have children of my own, so I'm so happy I was able to help this sweet, innocent baby", Ivic said.

MCTS says this is the ninth lost or missing child drivers have found in recent years.

The baby quickly fell asleep in the driver's arms as emergency services were called.

Irena Ivic dodged traffic to rescue the baby.

"I'm just grateful I was in the right place at the right time", Ivic said at a commendation ceremony held in her honor on Thursday.
