Heavy snow and freezing rain began on Friday across Missouri and Kansas. It also hit parts of other states including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.

According to the Associated Press, at least five people were killed in crashes on icy roads in Kansas and Missouri.

Some roads were blocked for hours and hundreds of drivers were stranded, with Missouri troopers responding to more than 3,000 calls on Saturday afternoon.

The storm is leaving its heaviest snowfall on areas west of St. Louis, where about a foot and a half of snow was recorded, with still more falling on Saturday, Orrison said. Dozens of flights were cancelled or delayed at St. Louis Lambert International Airport over the weekend, while United Airlines offered travel waivers for passengers changing flights across the path of the storm.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning effective through 6 p.m. ET Sunday for Washington, parts of central Maryland and northern and northwest Virginia. Between 8 to 12 inches of snow is expected near Washington, D.C., with "locally higher amounts" possible.

The storm eased up Saturday afternoon in St. Louis after dropping more than 10 inches of snow there. The wintry mix was also causing problems at airports in the region, including more than 250 flight cancellations at the three main airports serving the nation's capital.

Some interstates in Missouri, including I-70 and I-44, reopened Saturday morning after being shutdown Friday night, but treacherous conditions continued.

"There could be a period of ice that we're concerned about across portions of central North Carolina and back into the mountains", he added. Illinois State Police said troopers along the Mississippi River across from St. Louis have responded to more than 100 crashes during the storm.

A 62-year-old man died after his pickup truck skidded on the Kansas Turnpike and hit a concrete barrier, according to the patrol, and a 41-year-old driver from Mexico was killed in a crash involving two semitrailers in snowy conditions.

"Our crews remain out and are making good progress but as long as it's snowing the roads won't be totally clear", the Missouri Department of Transportation said on its St. Louis area Twitter feed.

The University of Missouri men's basketball game Saturday at the University of SC was moved to Sunday because of weather-related travel problems, the team tweeted.
