Food bank set up for Tampa Airport employees amid government shutdown

Officials say there have been no major delays and no impact on national security

According to spokesman Greg Chin, the wait times at Miami International remain normal and the closed terminal will reopen on Monday, staffed by TSA agents.

The terminal handles United Express flights.

Across the U.S., airports are making changes to deal with the shortage of screeners.

TSA spokesman Michael Billelo said callouts were at 7.7 percent nationwide Sunday.

But the impact of those absences on fliers and airport security has been hotly debated.

It is unclear what happened to the gun and if the passenger faced any consequences.

CNN points out that in 2015, the acting administrator for the TSA was reassigned to another department after a report concluded that employees "failed to detect explosives and weapons in almost every test that an undercover team conducted at dozens of airports". "We thank the public for their continued support and acts of kindness".

"Please contact the airport for more information".

He said the agency did not release staffing rates for individual airports and would not specify what "standard procedures" were not observed.

We've seen how national parks are becoming overrun with trash and vandalism, and how Transportation Security Administration workers are either quitting or calling out of work in droves as they remain unpaid.

Should more TSA workers call in sick, the county-owned airport is ready for more checkpoint closures.

"We've got food available for them, bus passes, waivers for their electrical bills, anything we can do to help out where we're trying to do that this week", Emily Nipps, airport spokesperson, told Bay News 9.

According to Bay News 9, within the first hour of its opening, roughly 60 workers took advantage of the pantry.

"We want people to keep coming to work", she said. "So, we made the investment, and not only did we enhance security, but we gave our passengers a much better experience going through that screening process".

The agency is working with airports and airlines to consolidate operations and get the most out of resources, Gregory added.

TSA Administrator David Pekoske announced the compensation Friday on Twitter amid mounting concerns that the nation's airports might not be able to provide the usual standard of security.

"While I realize this is not what you are owed for your hard work ... and what you deserve, I hope these actions alleviate some of the financial hardship many of you are facing", he wrote.
