Zimbabwe fuel price protests turn deadly

Zimbabwe economic crisis Fuel price hike national strike and a new currency

Most shops remained closed in Harare, and minibus taxis that usually transport workers from the suburbs to the city centre were not running. "We should concentrate on manpower training in the area of the army", Mnangagwa said. Clashes between police and protesters have occurred in Chitungwiza.

Nationwide protests erupted on Monday after Mnangagwa's announcement that fuel would more than double in price as the country's economic crisis deepens.

Everyday life in Harare remains at a standstill two days after protests over a massive hike in fuel prices turned deadly.

A protester burns tires in a highway from Harare to Bulawayo in Warren Park of Harare, Zimbabwe, Jan. 15, 2019. People could still use laptops and computers to access internet before the access was completely down on about 11:30 a.m.

Some services had been restored by Wednesday afternoon.

"People are protesting now that things are hurting. Close to 100 people appeared at the Harare magistrates Court today", said Mafunda. The security forces assaulted some occupants and, in some instances, forced residents out of their homes.

"Threats to overthrow a constitutionally elected government by force and install an unelected person as president of Zimbabwe will be thwarted", she vowed.

"The internet black-out is worrisome and unsafe as it gave government blanket immunity to hunt down and kill people".

Mawarire is yet to be charged but stands accused of inciting violence along with almost 60 out of 200 protesters arrested in the past three days.

He said Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp had been down for more than 24 hours.

Pastor Mawarire was arrested by armed police at his house on Wednesday morning.

"The prevailing security situation in the country is a culmination of a well orchestrated series of events by the MDC Alliance working in cahoots with NGOs, civic society, youth organisations, pressure groups and individuals", said the minister.

"People have a right to demonstrate, but they should do so peacefully", he said. He declined to comment further, saying that the organisation will issue a statement later.

R Kelly interviewed by police over allegations of 'keeping two women hostage'
She said that he forced her to call him "daddy" and would lock her in a van during their 11 month relationship. Kelly , which chronicled the decades of sexual misconduct accusations made against the singer.

The protesters have accused the president - now on a tour of Russian Federation and Asian countries - of failing to live up to his promises.

"Wanton violence and cynical destruction is not the Zimbabwean way".

Global concern has been rising over Zimbabwe after a burst of optimism when Mugabe stepped down in late 2017 under military pressure.

"Unfortunately, what we have witnessed is violence and vandalism instead of peaceful, legal protests".

He urged the government to listen to the people and end the violence.

Beatrice Mtetwa, Mawarire's lawyer, told reporters that police "are alleging that he incited violence through Twitter and other forms of social media".

He blamed opposition figures and political rights groups for the violence and said an investigation was under way.

"What will lead to a stronger economy is investment".

Mnangagwa is now on a whirlwind fundraising European tour which started in Russian Federation and is set to conclude in Davos at the World Economic Forum.

"For Zimbabwe to recover, we can not go it alone", the president said on the weekend. We can take the Japanese yen, which is seen by many as a safe haven...you can take the U.S. dollar, but it will still collapse as long as we do not have the proper fundamentals on the ground.

"I can't say that we want this much or that much", the Zimbabwean leader said in an interview. "We will get there", he said. "I call for calm and peace from all of our brothers and sisters". "We are one nation, with one mission, and we will realise it together".

Thousands of Zimbabweans have taken to the streets this week, barricading roads and torching some government property after the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions called for the stay-away to protest the state's doubling of fuel prices.
