Is Facebook's '10-Year Challenge' meme a creepy facial recognition gambit?

Facebook could be using its 10 year challenge meme to refine its face recognition AI

Started off by Kate O'Neill from her Twitter post, she sarcastically pondered about "how all this data could be mined to train facial recognition algorithm on age progression and age recognition". According to Naimal Khan, companies like Facebook would not need to rely on the "ad hoc" data of the 10 Year Challenge when they could "automatically crawl through your photo archive to do it in a more rigorous manner".

Now if you'll excuse us, we're off to delete our selfies.

If you have been on Facebook or Instagram recently, you will have noticed the "10 Year Challenge".

In the middle of all the faux pas Facebook made in 2018, the company had already encountered a run-in with its use of facial recognition. The trends are going viral on Facebook and Instagram. Even if the challenge isn't a case of social engineering, the website has come under fire following numerous controversial claims against them. They aren't receiving anything in return other than the warm glow of a humblebrag, because let's face it if you really look ten years older then you are unlikely to participate in the challenge.

#10YearChallenge: I kid myself that not much has changed after 10 yrs, other than my hair colour & hair line! "It would help if you knew they were taken a fixed number of years apart-say, 10 years", O'Neill wrote.

"A much simpler explanation is that they just want you to log in and go on a nostalgia trip", another Twitter user said.

In her article, O'Neill sought to examine the plausibility of the conspiracy theory, lay out what Facebook might stand to gain from collecting facial recognition data and discuss the applications of facial recognition technology, which she said range from the beneficial (helping to locate missing children) to the nefarious (police harassment and invasions of privacy).

What's more, for the profile pictures on Facebook, the photo posting date wouldn't necessarily match the date that the picture was taken.

While some trans people posted that they were uncomfortable sharing photos from before their transition, plenty jumped in with gusto.

Now comes a report that Facebook may be using facial recognition in tandem with a notion called the "10-Year Challenge" to surreptitiously mine sensitive information for its 2.7 billion users.

After you post your comparison photos, you'll probably be checking in to see if people think you've aged well and to see your friends' posts. He also cautioned against trusting Facebook that the whole meme was merely for fun. However, what we should be mindful about is sharing your information data online, especially to those who have a public profile page that anyone has access to.
