Mother Dies in 'Heartbreaking' NYC Subway Fall

Young mom takes fatal fall down Midtown subway station stairs while carrying baby daughter in stroller cops

The victim has been identified as Malaysia Goodson.

Her cousin, Ronshuana Anthony, said Goodson's daughter was the light of her life.

Goodson, of Stamford, had reportedly been in the city for shopping trip when the tragic fall occurred.

A 22-year-old woman was found dead at the bottom of a bank of stairs inside the Seventh Avenue subway station in Manhattan with a 1-year-old by her side. Funding has been secured to upgrade accessibility to 26 more, according to the news station.

'She was very protective, she died trying to protect her baby. One of four children, she was raised in NY but moved to Stamford with her family nine years ago. Her high school guidance counselor told the newspaper that Malaysia was a "sweetheart" with a "tough shell". "She was the kind of kid that when you made her smile", he said, "it felt like a real win".

"He was just devastated, too", Dieshe Goodson said. She was adored by many and loved tremendously by her family and friends.

Ms Goodson is said to have been working at a nursery in Stamford but had dreams of becoming a security guard or a flight attendant.

The 22-year-old was unconscious when police arrived. Her daughter, Rhylee, survived.

The Real Science Behind Trump's Climate Change Tweet
The Climate Reality Project, launched by former Vice President Al Gore, tweeted: "Yes, it's cold". "Weather isn't climate. Weather refers to the atmospheric conditions at a particular place and time .

"I don't know, maybe she was starting to feel faint", her mom, Tamika Goodson, told the Post.

They said it's unclear if she had some sort of medical episode or slipped, and her family said they're not sure either, NBC reported.

The NYPD says a medical examiner will determine the cause of Goodson's death.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which also is investigating, calls Goodson's death "a heartbreaking tragedy".

Less then half of the neighbourhoods served by the subway have at least one elevator-accessible station, according to a 2018 report, which doesn't take into account frequent elevator outages and malfunctions.

The subway station in midtown Manhattan did not have an elevator. Only about a quarter of the subway system's 472 stations have elevators, and the ones that exist are often out of order. Additionally, they malfunction about 53 times a year. That can make them frustrating for disabled subway riders who depend on them and an unappealing option for straphangers who do not.

This is a heartbreaking tragedy that never should have happened.

Andy Byford, who was appointed the MTA's head of the subway system last year after running the Toronto Transit Commission, has set a goal of adding enough elevators to the system that after five years, no rider will be more than two stops away from an accessible station.
