Maduro Proposes New Parliament Vote as Venezuelans Protest

Foreign Secretary call with Juan Guaido: 30 January 2019

"It's time for Maduro to get out of the way". He's backed by the United States and roughly two dozen nations.

The socialist leader also had words for the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump which recently imposed sanctions on Venezuelan oil exports in an effort to undermine Maduro's main source of income and weaken his grip on the country.

US officials who have warned Maduro will face "serious consequences" if he harms Guaido denounced the incident as a disgraceful intimidation tactic. She said the crowd gathered to show their appreciation for Canada and the world for standing with Venezuela's "democratic path".

Similar talks in the past have failed, and opposition leaders have said Maduro uses them to stall for time.

Mireanna Fernandez, a 20-year-old student at a protest in the eastern city of Ciudad Guayana, said before Mr Guaido's January 23 proclamation she wanted to leave Venezuela, but now she had hope that Mr Maduro's government would end.

The government called for a mass rally Thursday to denounce US sanctions against Venezuela's state-owned oil company that could starve Maduro's government of billions in export revenue but turnout was no more than a few hundred people.

Chevron has four joint-venture operations for exploration and production with PDVSA, as the Venezuelan company is known. He spoke Friday in a conference call with Wall Street analysts. He also said economics and "national peace" would be the focus of the conversation. Wirth says Chevron had a contingency plan in place in anticipation of the sanctions and has alternate sourcing.

"We are not just taking aid from the United States", Guaido explained. He said "we will keep the refinery full with crude".

A high-ranking Venezuelan general has called on the armed forces to rebel against President Nicolas Maduro.

Tens of thousands of protesters poured into the streets of Caracas on Saturday in rival displays for and against embattled Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, as an air force general became the highest-ranking officer to recognise opposition leader Juan Guaido as the crisis-torn country's acting president.

Venezuelan opposition leader and self-proclaimed interim president Juan Guaido is greeted by supporters as he leaves a rally against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's government in Caracas, Venezuela February 2, 2019. Earlier, Venezuela's Supreme Court declared all acts of the National Assembly, headed by Guaido, as null and void.

Later, in front of supporters, Maduro proposed bringing forward elections for the National Assembly (NA) to this year, instead of next.

Canada, the U.S., Australia, the EU Parliament and other Latin American countries have proclaimed their support for Guaido, while Russian Federation and China have put their support behind Maduro.

Maduro's remarks come after the USA declared Guaido as the legitimate leader, while European Union member states are expected to follow suit next week.

In a video circulating on Twitter on Saturday, General Francisco Yanez of the air force's high command said most of the armed forces already disavowed Maduro, who claims he is victim of a coup directed by the US.

"China's support will be very important in boosting our country's economy and future development", Guaido, the 35-year-old opposition leader, said in the email interview with the newspaper. Garcia Palomo has been an outspoken critic of Maduro for months and had openly declared his intentions to amass a military force in exile to remove Maduro from power. "And we believe this is the moment".

Meanwhile, streams of marchers in another part of the capital walked from middle-class and poor neighborhoods and said they were demanding Maduro's resignation and a transitional government that would hold new presidential elections in the South American country.

Guaido has rejected offers from Mexico's and Uruguay's presidents to negotiate with Maduro.
