Woody Allen Sues Amazon For Backing Out of $73 Million Deal

Woody Allen

Filmmaker Woody Allen has filed a $68 million suit against Amazon for breach of contract, accusing the streaming giant of cancelling a film deal because of a "baseless" decades-old allegation that he sexually abused his daughter. "There simply was no legitimate ground for Amazon to renege on its promises".

As it was previously reported, Dylan Farrow, for many many years has claimed that Allen abused her when she was a child.

Subsequently, Amazon's representatives stated they were canceling the agreement, due to "supervening events, including renewed allegations against Mr. Allen, his own controversial comments, and the increasing refusal of top talent to work with or be associated with him in any way, all of which have frustrated the goal of the Agreement".

Allen has long denied the allegation by Dylan Farrow and her mother Mia Farrow, who appeared in a dozen of his films and was his longtime partner.

Then - on June 19, 2018 - Allen says he was served a termination notice that stated, "Amazon is terminating the Agreement with respect to each of the Pictures" and that "Amazon does not intend to distribute or otherwise exploit the Pictures in any domestic or worldwide territories". Part of Allen's defense against the Amazon deal was that they knew of the allegations back then and still signed the deal with him.

76ers acquire Tobias Harris, Boban Marjanovic in major trade with Clippers
According to O'Connor, that's not yet a done deal as there is some dispute over the protections of that draft pick. The Clippers re-stocked the roster with pieces for the future.

In his complaint, Allen references other controversies Amazon has faced during the #MeToo movement. Allen said executives had met with him in December 2017 to discuss the "negative publicity and reputational harm" stemming from those claims and the studio's association with Harvey Weinstein but agreed to proceed with the release of "Rainy Day".

A little over a year ago in January of 2018, Ajay Patel, the general counsel of the organization, stated they had to delay the release of Woody's latest movie until 2019, which Allen was fine with at the time. It seeks $68 million in minimum guarantee payments for the four films Allen was set to release through Amazon.

Before the four-film contract, Amazon had produced three projects by Allen, a miniseries called "Crisis in Six Scenes" and the films "Cafe Society" and "Wonder Wheel".

Just Law, who stars in A Rainy Day in New York, previously told The New York Times "it's a awful shame" the film was shelved.
