Buyer's Remorse? Amazon Could be Getting Cold Feet in NY

Amazon has not yet bought office space for the NY headquarters, and officials in other cities have been more enthusiastic about hosting the company.

Amazon is reconsidering plans to build their second headquarters in New York City, according to a report on the Washington Post.

On Monday, New York State Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins chose Senator Michael Gianaris, a Deomocrat who represents Long Island City, and one of the biggest cricits of the Amazon deal, as one of three members of the board.

"If they stop Amazon from coming to New York they're going to have the people of New York State to explain it to", Cuomo said. In doing so, Amazon is signaling that it will squeeze opponents of the deal politically unless they support the massive subsidy package. "I think defeating an unprecedented act of corporate welfare is absolutely a victory". The report notes that no plans to officially abandon ny have been made, though there is expected to be a third City Council hearing on the matter later this month.

Some people involved in the planning for Amazon's East Coast expansion have discussed whether to pare back the NY plans, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations.

It can also apply for other tax incentives, such as New York City's Relocation and Employment Assistance Program that offers tax breaks potentially worth $900 million over 12 years. Such uproar has stood in contrast with the company's reception in Virginia, which has been largely friendly.

"The question is whether it's worth it if the politicians in NY don't want the project, especially with how people in Virginia and Nashville have been so welcoming", said one unnamed Washington Post source.

But the company has not made the decision to withdraw, and the discussions could be seen as a threat to quiet the opposition.

And while city lawmakers have spoken out against the deal, Mayor de Blasio doesn't believe they are completely opposed to the possibility of thousands of new jobs in the area.

Cuomo, de Blasio and Gianaris and another critic of the deal did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

Contrast the opposition in NY with the welcome in Virginia, and you can see why Amazon executives are reconsidering their choice. Inside Amazon, all indications are that the company is moving full-steam ahead with the expansion, according to a person familiar with the matter.

"We're focused on engaging with our new neighbors - small business owners, educators, and community leaders".

Gov. Andrew Cuomo warns that what he calls "political pandering" to critics of Amazon's proposed secondary headquarters could sink New York's biggest-ever economic development deal.

The Washington Post, it should be added, is owned by Jeff Bezos, who is the founder, chairman, CEO, and president of Amazon.

This much is certain: The plan to give Amazon tax breaks of $3 billion to come to Long Island City has been met with resistance and backlash from some local groups and politicians, nearly since the day it was announced that the area was co-winner of an RFP process that attracted more than 200 proposals from across North America.
