Pep Guardiola left confused by Benjamin Mendy's Hong Kong Instagram post

Benjamin Mendy has missed most of the season through injury

"I don't know. I have to install an Instagram account because I didn't know".

Social media funnyman Benjamin Mendy (also a professional footballer) appeared to have been in hot water with his manager for a short while on Friday.

Asked if it would be okay for Mendy to be in Hong Kong, Guardiola laughed: "No, definitely not!".

"Wow, I didn't know it", said Guardiola, laughing, after a reporter brought the post to light.

Guardiola interacted with the media for the pre-match conference earlier today and talked about Benjamin Mendy, dropping an F-bomb when suggested by a media-person that the player is in Hong Kong.

"Before he went he said "I'm going one day to Paris", and that's OK because that's here, but Hong Kong is far away, so I don't know". Really I don't know.

The Frenchman later claimed he was only joking, but not until after he had caught his manager Pep Guardiola by surprise.

'Hong Kong?' exclaimed an incredulous Guardiola.

When asked at a press conference whether the apparent trip was planned, Guardiola - who believed Mendy to still be in Barcelona - responded: "Wow".

Manchester City have made a strong comeback in the Premier League title race after a stunning defeat to Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old is now sidelined with a knee injury and Guardiola confirmed in his pre-match press conference ahead of Manchester City's game with Chelsea on Sunday that the World Cup victor would not be involved in the game.

Pep continued: "Yesterday he was in Barcelona".

He said: "I was joking with my Uber driver".

Mendy enjoyed a sensational start to the season, supplying five assists in nine Premier League appearances but he has been beset by knee problems for the second season running after missing virtually the entire 2017-18 campaign with an ACL injury.

Asking the press officer next to him, Guardiola said, "Did you know?" He needs to re-adapt.
