Amazon will not build HQ2 in NY

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez attends the Women's March

Earlier Thursday, the company announced it was reversing the plan, announced in November, to build new East Coast headquarters buildings in New York City and in Arlington, Virginia.

Ocasio-Cortez was joined by City Councillor Jimmy Van Bramer - who represents Long Island City on the council - and New York State Senator Michael Gianaris in opposing the headquarters deal. It's a big reversal of its much-hyped decision to build a new headquarters in Queens after a highly publicized nationwide search. On Thursday, the company announced it would not be moving forward with plans to build a headquarters in NY, citing opposition from state and local politicians.

Its plans were met with marches and rallies in opposition, and Amazon executives further angered opponents by declaring at a City Council hearing that they would oppose any effort by employees to unionize.

Some people who praised the pullout included references to the wealth of Amazon's chief executive and founder, Jeff Bezos, the world's richest man with an estimated fortune of about $135 billion, while many who saw the decision as a blow to NY cited the loss of potentially tens of thousands of new jobs. "Similarly, we support the resistance against Amazon's HQ2, because we believe in a safe and sustainable future for USA cities that we know Amazon is at odds with". Amazon will also continue growing across its 17 corporate offices and tech hubs in the USA and Canada, and will still expand its footprint in the New York City area, where it now employs about 5,000 workers.

"Certainly, Amazon has a reputation in Seattle, and people in Seattle view the company much differently than folks outside in the rest of the world", he said. The Nashville office is expected to have 5,000. But they were divided over the incentives: 46 percent in favor, 44 percent against. Still, he says that the company has a fairly positive public image. The company said it would not look for a new location to replace the cancelled $2.5 billion project. Instead, it will continue working with Tennessee and Virginia, which were part of the initial announcement. NY was declared the victor last November, after a charm offensive by Mayor Bill DeBlasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said he would "change my name to Amazon Cuomo if that's what it takes".

Acting Attorney General 'has not' spoken to Trump about Russian Federation probe
Whitaker said he can't talk about ongoing investigations, but that yes, he has been briefed on them. The New York Democrat later confirmed that Whitaker will appear on Friday morning.

The billions of dollars in tax incentives that Amazon was awarded stirred backlash from a number of activists.

In its statement, Amazon eluded to another poll that showed 70 percent of New Yorkers support their plans and investment. James Patchett, head of the New York City Economic Development Corp., also repeatedly argued for the massive benefits of the HQ2 project during the heated council meetings, saying it would protect New York from future recessions and be a boon for its development as a tech hub.

Showing just how important Amazon has become on the political stage, representatives local and national, from all sides of the aisle commented on the decision. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. There are now over 5,000 Amazon employees in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island, and we plan to continue growing these teams.

In Amazon's announcement on Thursday, the company thanked Governor Cuomo for his support on the project.
