Trump hails North Korea's 'awesome' potential ahead of talks with Kim

International media staking out the Melia Hotel in downtown Hanoi where the North Korean delegation is staying

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday touted an "AWESOME" future for North Korea ahead of a high-stakes dinner with its leader Kim Jong Un if his "friend" agrees to give up his nuclear arsenal.

Trump has repeatedly said he was "in no rush" as USA officials pressed North Korea to come up with a clear timetable on denuclearization and the dismantlement of nuclear facilities, weapons and delivery means in a verifiable and irreversible way.

Kim's armored train arrived Tuesday morning at a station in a border town with China, with the leader proceeding to Hanoi in a Mercedes-Benz limousine.

North Korea has spent decades, at great economic sacrifice, building its nuclear program, and there is widespread skepticism that it will give away that program cheaply.

Now Trump talks of "love" between them. "No two people alone have broad enough shoulders to take on the weight of such challenging issues spread out over 70 years".

The White House says he'll meet with Kim at a hotel in Hanoi's French Quarter followed by a dinner.

In Hanoi, Kim and Trump have a more hard task of working out concrete steps toward denuclearization in return for USA concessions.

The ups and downs have rattled Americans and allies alike, and the two leaders' past erratic statements have raised uncertainty about the horse trading they might do on nuclear-tipped weapons, economic sanctions and other critical matters at their second summit meeting this week in Vietnam.

"The ambiguity and obscurity of the term "denuclearization" only exacerbates the skepticism about both the US and North Korean commitments to denuclearization".

Iran's Rouhani rejects resignation of foreign minister Zarif
His comments came after Zarif announced his resignation from the cabinet in a post on his Instagram account on Monday night. Hardships have triggered waves of nation-wide protests, with calls for both Rouhani and clerical leaders to step down.

U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton posted on Twitter Wednesday there will be much to discuss over the following two days during the second U.S.

Reports said Kim succumbed just once, quietly slipping out of the crowded banquet hall in the evening to smoke in a separate room.

Trump scoffs at the doubters.

-North Korea summit between Trump and Kim, here's how Kim's visit to Vietnam will be significant.

Whatever the outcome, the summit should boost Kim's bid to end his country's pariah status and cement his place, both on the world stage and at home. Recruits tend to be drawn from elite North Korean families.

Trump, landing in darkness, waved as he disembarked Air Force One and was met by senior Vietnamese and US officials.

While Trump is in Hanoi, his former personal lawyer Michael Cohen is testifying before USA congressional committees, with the president's business practices the main focus.

"He wants to something also", Trump said later.

Joseph Yun, a former USA special representative for North Korea, said there is a strong chance that the summit ends "not with a breakthrough, but with some degree of progress". She adds that a "front-loading on USA concessions without getting anything proportionate in return, as Trump did in Singapore, risks losing negotiating leverage very quickly and allowing Pyongyang to dictate this entire process". For that reason, he said, a formal peace declaration ending the Korean War ― which would supplant the armistice signed in 1953 ― would be ill-advised.
