Canada said Friday it will allow the us extradition case against Chinese Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou to proceed.

Prosecutors said that between 2007 and 2017, Meng, Huawei and subsidiaries sought to mask their business with Iran in contravention of USA and United Nations sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

Meng was arrested in Vancouver in December at the request of USA authorities, who later charged both her and Huawei with fraud over alleged efforts to violate us sanctions against Iran.

Later in January, the USA department of justice announced around 13 criminal charges against Meng. The two affiliates have also been charged with industrial espionage, accused of stealing from T-Mobile, a USA telecoms company. Furthermore, if she gets extradited to the U.S. and then she will have to face a trial there.

According to Reuters, Meng is set to appear in a Vancouver court on March 6 to set an official date for her us extradition hearing.

"The Chinese side is utterly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes the issuance of Authority to Proceed by the Department of Justice Canada on the case of Meng Wanzhou", said a spokesperson of the Chinese embassy.

A Reuters report suggests that the case will likely be determined by the Federal Justice Minister, should the appeal process brings the decision to his desk.

In 2011, when Ontario Superior Court Justice Robert Maranger approved the extradition of Canadian sociology professor Hassan Diab to face murder charges, he said the French case was weak, problematic, and that Diab was "unlikely" to be convicted if given a fair trial. It also called on the United States to drop its arrest warrant and extradition request, he added. She is not only the chief financial officer of Huawei, but the daughter of the company's founder. The conduct for which extradition is sought must also be considered criminal in both the United States of America and in Canada.

While Canada's government has now formally commenced the extradition process, the final decision will be made in court.

China had "solemnly protested" to the Canadian authorities for Ms Meng's release, and called on the U.S. to drop its arrest warrant and extradition request, Lu added.

Trump said he would consider intervening in the case against Meng if it would be in the interest of USA national security or help forge a trade deal with Beijing.

There has been an ongoing diplomatic standoff between Beijing and Ottawa due to Meng's arrest, with China calling for Meng's return.

In a statement emailed to reporters on Friday, members of Meng's defense team expressed "disappointment" that the hearings will go ahead despite the "political nature" of the charges.

China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor on December 10 in an apparent attempt to pressure Canada to release Meng.

China also sentenced another Canadian, Robert Lloyd Schellenberg, to death in a sudden retrial of his drug-smuggling case.
