People walk amid debris in Lee County. "We still have some people that are reported missing". "We will stand together and get through this together".

All but six of the victims were identified, and investigators think they know the identities of the others, Harris said.

She said searches of damaged homes and structures had turned up no serious injuries or deaths there.

Jones said children were among the dead, but he didn't know exactly how many.

A sheriff says the death toll is now at 23 from a large tornado that devastated an Alabama community.

"The challenge is the sheer volume of the debris where all the homes were located", Sheriff Jay Jones told CNN. "But I want to offer the caveat that we have not completed our searches".

The National Weather Service will be sending out survey teams to assess damage in Autauga, Macon, Lee, Barbour and Butler counties Monday.

The swath of destruction left by the storm was a quarter mile (0.4 kilometres) wide and stretched for the "several miles that it travelled on the ground", according to Jones.

But he said crews were still surveying damage in several counties in the south-western part of the state.

The tornado is believed to have been about a mile wide and spanned about 24 miles in length, leaving a path of destruction as it made its way through Alabama, Georgia and SC. There was another likely twister reported in the county, he said.

Scott Fillmer was at home when the storm hit in Lee County.

Numerous tornado warnings were posted across parts of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and SC on Sunday afternoon as the storm system raced across the region.

Trump says Monday the country is "sending our love and prayers to the incredible people of Alabama".

Weather officials said Monday the most destructive tornado that hit Alabama left a path of death and destruction about 24 miles long and almost 1 mile wide.

Sunday night, Sheriff announced that the deaths were in Lee County, on the Georgia border, which included both children and adults. "Thank God, no one was injured", he said.

About 8,000 lost power. "Tornadoes and storms were truly violent and more could be coming". "We're going to organize search areas and quadrants and start a more intensive search in the morning and cover areas we've already covered and some additional areas as well".

"I can not recall at least in the last 50 years. a situation where we have had this loss of life that we experienced today".

Search and rescue operations were called off Sunday evening at 10 p.m., when the darkness and cold made it too risky to sift through ripped up metal and wood.

The small community of Beauregard was especially hard-hit.
