Trump Blames Cohen Hearing for Collapse of N. Korean Summit

National Security Advisor John Bolton said President Donald Trump protected American national interests by walking away from his talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without an agreement

But the president never specifically but the blame on Kim, which many lawmakers and Warmbier's family said the blame is to fall. "It means that he accepts that's what Kim Jong Un said", Bolton said.

"He went from that isolation -saw no light of day outside of the borders of North Korea- to now this worldwide player, certainly in the region and that gave him stature for him to walk in and do what he did in those hearings", Rogers said.

"Sometimes you have to walk and this was just one of those times", an unusually downbeat Trump said on Thursday, adding that he would "rather do it right than do it fast". "While I believe the United States-North Korea negotiations will eventually reach an agreement, it's never desirable for a vacuum in dialogue or stalemate to be prolonged", he said, urging South Korean officials to find ways for the USA and North Korea to narrow their differences. He argued that Trump's policies "gave him [Kim] stature for him to walk in and do what he did" during the summit last week.

Bolton was touring the Sunday political shows the morning after the US and South Korea announced an end to key annual large-scale military exercises.

"He's not desperate for a deal, not with North Korea, not with anybody if it's contrary to American national interests", Bolton said.

Bolton spoke on "Fox News Sunday", CNN's "State of the Union" and CBS's "Face the Nation".

Bolton said that Trump's "got a hard line to walk to" in negotiating with North Korea.

Bolton also sought to explain Trump's comments about taking Kim's word about Otto Warmbier, the American college student who was held prisoner in North Korea and was sent home in a vegetative state and later died.

House Democrats arranged for Cohen to testify before an oversight committee.

But Bolton said that Trump's view is that he "gave nothing away".

Still, Washington and Seoul are committed to keeping an atmosphere of dialogue alive and announced on Sunday that they would be eliminating their massive springtime military drills and replacing them with smaller exercises in what they call an effort to support diplomacy with Pyongyang. US officials have long said the spring exercises, known as Foal Eagle and Key Resolve, would be reduced in scope as the countries embraced smaller-scale drills.
