Trump Complains of 'Presidential Harassment' by 'Crazed Democrats'

President Trump Hugs American Flag at Conservative Conference

McCarthy's comments follow dozens of document requests from the House Judiciary Committee, which Nadler now chairs, to persons connected to the White House.

The President reacted to his worsening plight with a vehement defense on Sunday, after a week in which testimony from his ex-lawyer Michael Cohen deepened his political vulnerability and ahead of the expected filing soon of special counsel Robert Mueller's report.

The Democrats had replaced to the beginning of the year Trumps the Republicans as the majority party in the house of representatives.

Behold the circular logic: No investigations that might lead to impeachment hearings later are legitimate because Democrats haven't gathered sufficient evidence of impeachable offenses before launching their investigations, which conveniently rules out any investigations.

"I encourage it", Trump said, "I think it's really something Democrats should promote".

Trump's face perspired as he lashed out at critics after a stressful week during which his former lawyer Michael Cohen accused the president in congressional testimony of breaking the law.

Cohen has been sentenced to prison for three years after pleading guilty to financial crimes and to lying to Congress that Trump's Russian business overtures ended in January 2016 at the outset of the presidential campaign. That could mean nearly anything; Schiff's committee can - and most certainly will - investigate Trump for the rest of the president's term.

The committee interviewed Cohen in private on Thursday and will finish the interview this coming Wednesday. Needless to say, nor can the fact that Trump's top campaign officials eagerly tried to conspire in that effort (which Trump subsequently tried to hide from the American people).

The committee's jurisdiction touches on all parts of government. It is not an abuse of uniquely presidential power.

Their demands came just hours after Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler issued document requests to 81 people or entities in the Trump orbit, on everything from hirings and firings to pardons and presidential emoluments to negotiations with Russian Federation before, during and after the election.

Nadler said his committee requested the documents, which were already shared with Mueller's team, "in order to begin building the public record" amid concerns that Justice Department officials "may hide the work of the special counsel's investigation". The Committee wants the responses to its questions within two weeks. Schiff has launched a new Trump-Russia investigation to re-cover the territory covered in the probes done by his own committee, by the Senate Intelligence Committee, and by Trump-Russia special counsel Robert Mueller.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed Mueller to lead the special counsel investigation back in May 2017.

Trump approvingly quoted Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., on Fox making a similar point. But reality is more complicated, and the request could end up in a lengthy court battle between Congress and the administration.

The President also used his speech at CPAC to knock back accusations that his firing of Comey was an attempt to shut down the Russian Federation investigation and therefore fits the definition of obstruction of justice.

It's unlikely that his cooperation will extend to the request for access to his translator during his meetings with Mr. Putin, though.

But dealing with the probe's conclusions will be a delicate dance for Democrats, said a half-dozen Republican, Democratic and independent strategists and analysts.

A freshman Democrat says that it is her "duty and responsibility" to seek President Trump's impeachment over violations of the US Constitution's emoluments clause. She has said Mulvaney may be called to testify.

Mueller's team has enlisted attorneys from other parts of the Justice Department to jointly prosecute three ongoing cases, court records show, and referrals by Mueller have given rise to independent inquiries in Washington, Virginia and NY.
