Nintendo announces Nintendo Labo 'VR Kit'

Nintendo's Labo VR kits turn the Switch into a Google Cardboard with extras

A Nintendo Labo: VR Kit contains cardboard pieces and software to build six Toy-Con projects: Toy-Con VR Goggles, a Toy-Con Blaster, Toy-Con Camera, Toy-Con Bird, Toy-Con Wind-Pedal (?) and a Toy-Con Elephant.

Labo owners will be able to use these VR creations in the Toy-Con Garage software suite, although Nintendo hasn't yet detailed how this will work.

Expansion Set 1 will include the Elephant and Camera while Expansion Set 2 has the Wind Pedal and Bird.

The Labo: VR Kit will launch in two configurations on April 12, 2019. Curiously, there doesn't appear to be any gameplay footage of the Labo VR Kit's games.

Now, a year or two later than expected, Nintendo has officially proved the naysayers wrong with a VR add-on - though it comes in Google Cardboard-inspired Labo Toy-Con form, as the fourth build-your-own accessory bundle in the range.

Nintendo announced a new kit in its Labo activity line of gaming peripherals. Anyone who purchases the Starter Kit can buy expansions later to upgrade their VR experience.

Nintendo is entering the world of virtual reality with two new Nintendo Labo kits that turn the Switch into a makeshift VR headset.

There's no video for the new kits just yet, but you can read the full USA press release below.

The Nintendo Labo VR Kit launches next month in all regions.

Incoming Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser said, "We wanted to design an experience that encourages both virtual and real-world interactions among players through passing around Toy-Con creations". It's reminiscent of Google's Cardboard, which turns smartphones into VR goggles and was introduced nearly five years ago.

If you're interested in the idea of playing virtual reality games on your Switch, but don't want to spend $80 right away, there is also a starter set which features just the goggles and the blaster for $39.99.

The Nintendo VR Kit will release in April.
