Tesla V3 Supercharging: 250kW charge stations announced

Tesla v3 supercharging

At its peak, V3 can charge at rates of 1,000 miles per hour, and can top up a Model 3 Long Range with 75 miles of charge in five minutes. Because the rollout requires new hardware, Tesla says that it will help satisfy owners by increasing the charge rate on its existing Supercharger v2 infrastructure by about 20 percent.

While much of the enabling technology for this comes from the new cable design and a 1 megawatt Supercharger power cabinet, Tesla is updating the Model 3 as well to optimize itself pre-charge.

Along with other changes, Tesla's new V3 Supercharging network will ultimately halve the average time customers spend charging their cars, the company said on its blog.

The new V3 stations will charge up vehicles at 250 kW of power, making Tesla's vehicles the fastest charging vehicles in the world!

Tesla is speeding up charging with the third generation of its Supercharger.

Average time charging

Don't call Tesla's old charging cable (right) fat, but it does look a bit husky next to the new, liquid-cooled model (left). The Model Y SUV, due to be revealed next week, will likely also be able to use the system because it shares technical elements with the Model 3 saloon.

The new faster stations, the logic improvements, and the increase in speed on the V2 Supercharging network translates to less time spent charging and higher throughput at the new V3 Superchargers. The Model S and Model X will experience an undisclosed increase to their respective charging rate "in the coming months".

For now, Tesla has opened the one public beta V3 Supercharger in Fremont, California. More stations will follow, with North American sites ramping up in Q2 and Q3 ahead of the launch in Europe and Asia-Pacific in Q4.

Also new in a firmware update (2019.7.11) for Model 3 owners is "Summon with Key Fob", which lets owners "move your Model 3 in and out of a parking space from outside the auto using a paired key fob".
