'Majority of Madrid players have delivered, some have not' - Solari

Santiago Solari

Valladolid have troubles of their own with six points from their last 11 games seeing them sink towards the relegation zone and the club owned by former Real Madrid hero Ronaldo Nazario could decide to sack their coach Sergio Gonzalez in the case of a defeat.

The Portuguese, sacked by Manchester United in December a year ago, has been linked with a return to the Bernabeu with Santiago Solari's future in doubt after Real crashed out of the Champions League this week.

After a turbelent week at Real Madrid Santiago Solari's position at the club looks increasingly fragile, with different names being mentioned to take over the reins, most notably José Mourinho.

The defeat meant the 13-time European champions are out of the running for all major trophies this season, with the La Liga title well out of sight and their Copa del Rey campaign brutally ended by arch rivals Barcelona last month.

"The majority [of players] have delivered as expected, some have not, and I have told them so personally", Solari said.

After arriving 80 minutes late for his scheduled news conference at Madrid's Valdebebas training ground Saturday, Solari - who ESPN sources understand will be sacked once the club find a replacement - responded cryptically when asked directly if he felt all Madrid's players had been good enough.

"I will always do my best, as I have done since my first day here".

Football agent and close friend of Mourinho, Ioan Becali, said: "We met up to have breakfast in a hotel next to his house and he told me told that he had received an offer from China to take charge of the national team and they put a blank cheque in front of him".

Solari walked into Wednesday's Champions League game against Ajax with a knife over his head as rumours of a successor for the job have already been doing the rounds.

Despite the absences, Real Madrid still have a stronger side than Sunday's hosts, for them the game is not so much a test of skill, but of the will to win and commitment to their coach and their club. "The first is Valladolid tomorrow".
