Now 'impossible' to give Turkey F-35, United States warns

Russian servicemen drive S-400 missile air defense systems during the Victory Day parade at the Red Square in Moscow Russia

In November 2016 reports said that Turkey will purchase Russia's S-400 missile defense systems.

If it goes ahead with the Russian deal, Turkey also risks losing delivery of Lockheed Martin F-35 stealth fighter jets and could face sanctions under a U.S. law known as Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.

Turkey's deal to buy Russian S-400 missile defense systems had "nothing to do" with the security of the US, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Saturday after a Pentagon warning.

"If Turkey takes the S-400, there would be grave outcome in terms of our military relationship, and the Patriots and the F-35s", Summers was quoted as saying by Defense News.

Trump administration officials were in Turkey this week to work on the issue.

"I can tell you that if Turkey takes the S-400s there would be grave consequences in terms of our military relationship with them", Charles Summers, acting chief spokesman for the Pentagon, was quoted by U.S. media.

U.S. and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials have repeatedly complained that the Russian S-400 could not be integrated into the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation defence system. We will start joint production. Turkey has attempted to balance its ties with the US and Russian Federation but has shifted toward the latter in recent years.

The tone from the Pentagon is a shift from efforts by former Defense Secretary James Mattis to convince Congress to keep Turkey in the program.

Turkey is running out of time to avert a showdown with the United States over its plans to buy advanced Russian air defences and spurn a counter-offer from its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partner, raising the chance of USA sanctions against Ankara.

The head of the military department also reiterated that the acquisition of the Russian defence systems was "not a preference for Turkey, but a necessary measure".

It was the latest in a series of warnings the United States has made to Turkey over its plans to buy the S-400.

Washington fears the sophisticated radar of the S-400 system could compromise the F-35 technology, which was developed to elude Russian-made systems. "We are stuck between the two", he said.

The "issue was not about the S-400s" but about Turkey "taking actions on its own accord", especially in Syria, he added.

"Our peers say it is impossible to pass the sale of the F-35 aircraft in Congress, but we are working on a solution", he said, according to the Turkish Anadolu Agency.

Signed into law on August 2, 2017, CAATSA, among other things, imposed new sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea.
