‘Captain Marvel’ Cheers Theaters After a Dismal Start to 2019

The latest instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe - which features Brie Larson in the titular role - also managed an impressive figure in the U.S. box office, raking in a whopping $455 million overall.

Captain Marvel box office: How much has the MCU film made? It opened in India on Friday. Officially Captain Marvel also has taken over the second biggest domestic launch for a superhero movie starring a brand new character, the top spot which is now held by Black Panther.

Internationally, Captain Marvel has grossed an estimated $302 million - meaning it could rake in an estimated total of $455m globally.

"Captain Marvel" arrives almost a year after the cliffhanger ending to "Avengers: Infinity War", which teased that the heroine is the most powerful superhero and the only one who could take on villain Thanos.

The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson and Jude Law.

Captain Marvel may have polarised critics, but the latest film from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is scoring the big box office numbers. The film is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, and was filmed on location in Louisiana and California.

Captain Marvel has already sky rocketed up the box office charts.

Captain Marvel delivered an estimated $36 million on 1377 IMAX screens worldwide to become the fifth-biggest IMAX opening of all time and the first non-sequel to crack the top five IMAX films of all time. Captain Marvel continues IMAX's strong box office momentum in China, with its 2019 year-to-date box office in the mainland market now up approximately 60.7% over 2018. It opened up at No. 1 in the box office and brought in about $150 million for its opening weekend.

Surprising audiences before the screening, Larson walked out holding one of the cinema's soft drink cups and thanked fans for their support.
