Ailing Serena out at Indian Wells, Federer, Nadal move on

Serena Williams retired from her third-round WTA match against Garbine Muguruza at Indian Wells

"I wish I'm going to see her soon and she's feeling better".

The Romanian finally put away the 114th ranked Kozlova with eight consecutive points in the second set, a backhand victor proving the decider just as it had in the first set.

Serena Williams bowed out of the Indian Wells Open due to illness, while Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina enjoyed strong wins.

An ill Serena Williams retired from the BNP Paribas Open while trailing Spain's Garbine Muguruza 6-3 1-0 at Indian Wells on Sunday.

With the former world number one's groundstrokes failing her, Kozlova reeled off 11 of the next 12 points, breaking back for 5-5 with a forehand victor.

Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Christina McHale that took 20 games to decide.

Williams was playing her first tournament since the Australian Open in late January, when she lost in the quarterfinals.

"By the score, it might have looked like I started well, but I was not feeling at all well physically", Williams said in comments distributed by tournament officials.

Muguruza was leading 6-3, 1-0 when Williams called it a day in the battle of former world number ones because of a viral illness.

"It's really a weird feeling, because I don't feel like I won the match point and (got the) "well done, . good match".

Williams, who is now ranked number 10 in the world, has battled health issues in the past that nearly sidelined her ranking.

"I never played her, so it's also you're out there learning", Williams said.

Federer saved six of seven break chances against the German after losing just two points on his serve in the first set.

"It was hard for me to close those sets, but I'm actually proud that I could do that", added the Romanian.
