Ex-Hillary Adviser: Trump Impeachment Might Help Democrats

President Donald Trump speaks during an event in the Rose Garden at the White House to declare a national emergency in order to build a wall along the southern border

'The reality is that the Republican members of Congress with very few exceptions have been utterly unwilling to stand up to this president...' It also left Republican senators facing a painful choice: defy a president who commands passionate loyalty from conservative voters or acquiesce to what many lawmakers from both parties consider a dubious and risky expansion of presidential authority.

Republicans control the Senate 53-47, meaning that four GOP defections would be enough to send the resolution blocking Trump's border emergency to the White House.

Philippe Reines, a former senior adviser to Hillary Clinton, said impeaching President Donald Trump might be the best option for Democrats.

Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., who has pushed the administration for days on its legal rationale for declaring the national emergency, said Tuesday that he has started getting the information from White House officials. John Kennedy, R-La., recalling a favorite refrain of Monday Night Football announcers when a game was out of reach.

A group of GOP senators is pushing a proposal that would limit future National Emergency Declarations, and are seeking a commitment that the President would publicly support it, in exchange for dropping their opposition to the current national emergency.

"No one, not even the president, should be above the law", she said, according to The Hill.

Trump indicated he wasn't considering the Republicans' efforts at political leverage in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.

"No. I don't think he is [unfit]".

Lee said in a statement that he will now back the resolution canceling the border emergency because his own bill now lacks "an immediate path forward". "Over the last 80 years, Congress has voluntarily relinquished a whole lot of legislative power, handed it over to the executive branch. I hope this legislation will serve as a starting point for future work on this very important issue".

"I think it paints them as more extreme", South Dakota Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Kentucky's Rand Paul. Tillis faces a potentially tough re-election fight next year.

His Wednesday schedule, released to the press, shows he is set to receive a series of policy briefings followed by a meeting with Republican senators and a photo with the new White House interns.

Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, told reporters again Wednesday that he "made his decision some time ago" but would not announce it until "probably" right before the vote.

Lee's announcement comes as a Morning Consult/Politico report comes out which suggests that almost three-quarters of Republican voters would more likely vote for a candidate if they backed Trump's national emergency on the border.

That would mark a dramatic change in fortunes for Trump, who had been on track for an embarrassing defeat later this week in the GOP-controlled Senate in a confrontation with Congress over Trump's border wall.
