How signing Dee Ford changes 49ers’ plans in 2019 NFL Draft

Dee Ford

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to trade outside linebacker Dee Ford to the San Francisco 49ers, Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer reported on Tuesday.

Ford had 13 sacks in 2018, which was tied for 8th highest in the National Football League, and forced 7 fumbles.

The 27-year-old represents a major upgrade for a 49ers defensive front in search of edge-rush talent to complement its impressive crop of players on the interior.

But the 49ers also run a 4-3, though it's different from most.

Or the 49ers could just draft Bosa with the No. 2 overall pick.

Trudeau: Mistakes made in SNC-Lavalin affair, no rules broken
Trudeau responded to the Globe report by telling the news media that his government did not "direct" her on the matter. That's the difference between Justin Trudeau and me". "As we now learn ... that was not the case", Trudeau said.

The reported trade comes one week after the Chiefs placed a franchise tag on Ford.

Ford, 28, was amenable to playing 2019 on the franchise tag, but Kansas City is shifting away from the 3-4 defensive scheme it used under former defensive coordinator Bob Sutton, who was sacked at the end of the season after leading the NFL's 31st-ranked defense. Ford recorded 51 total tackles and 13 sacks in 2018, matching a career high set in 2016. San Francisco does have a tendency to play five men on the line of scrimmage on defense, so Ford could be a good fit in that package. San Francisco already agreed to terms on a four-year deal worth up to $54 million for Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker and impending free agent Kwon Alexander.

Kansas City's defensive scheme change from a 3-4 to a 4-3 was a key reason why the team shopped Ford.

San Francisco will send a 2020 second-round pick to Kansas City, a source confirmed.

Adding Ford shouldn't keep the 49ers from finding another edge rusher this offseason. We'd give it an "A" if Ford had more than two productive seasons coming in - and if he didn't undergo back surgery in 2017, which shouldn't be overlooked.
