Google reportedly canceled future tablet and laptop projects

Google hardware plans in doubt following internal restructuring

Google's Pixel Slate, launched late a year ago at the company's Made By Google event in NY, is yet to launch in many markets and makes an intriguing case for itself running Chrome OS but also being able to run Android apps.

It is worth noting that the "roadmap cutbacks" does not have any role to play in hardware division other than the tablet and laptop and that is a sigh of relief for employees occupied with projects related to Pixel smartphones, smart home devices and wearables. The affected employees have been seeking temporary roles within Google's smartphone division as well as in other Alphabet companies, allowing them to remain associated with Google and giving the company flexibility to reassess its decision in the future. We're glad to know that the employees involved are being reassigned to other projects within the company. The Pixelbook, like the Chromebook Pixel before it, is just a high-end Chrome OS laptop.

According to Business Insider, Google is now in the process of implementing a number of "roadmap cutbacks".

Today, the Create division is responsible for the Pixelbook laptop and Pixel Slate tablet amongst the company's wider swath of "Made by Google" products.

However, at least once source said that there was a "bunch of stuff in the works" that may now no longer see the light of day.

Rumors of a Pixelbook 2 have been swirling since the company's hardware event last October though it has yet to be released.

Manufacturing jobs have reportedly not been affected which implies that Google is only reassessing its plans for future products and the near-term devices will be launched as per plans.

The first Google manufactured tablet - known as the Pixel C - was launched in 2015 and received less than stellar reviews.

So it probably shouldn't come as a surprise that Google's dedication would waver in some of its Chrome OS hardware projects. Since then, sources tell us that pressure has increased to make hardware at Google into a "real business".
