Nigeria halts search a day after school collapses killing 8

Rescuers at the scene of the collapsed school

"Emergency workers are moving material out of the location because they believe the operations are over, but the locals insist that operations must continue because they believe that there are many people still trapped under the rubble", said Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from the scene.

The LASEMA Managing Director, Adesina Tiamiyu, said victims were rescued alive from the collapsed building, through the combined efforts of LASEMA and other emergency responders including Lagos State Ambulance Service, Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Building Control Agency, Federal Fire Service.

As if to confirm, the Lagos State government tweeted on it's official Twitter handle @followlasg: "Ongoing rescue operations by the Lagos State Rescue Unit at the collapsed building at Ita-faji, Lagos Island" at precisely 12:28PM, nearly two hours after the initial incident. "It is heartless to ask a woman who just lost four children to go and start looking for 150,000 to save the life of the last surviving child, please intervene on our behalf".

In 2016, a church that was still under construction collapsed in Uyo, after building was rushed to meet a deadline.

"My heartfelt prayers are with all the families affected by today's building collapse in the Ita Faaji area of Lagos Island, particularly the young schoolchildren, who are reportedly trapped inside".

Hundreds of families have been keeping vigil at the three leading hospitals in Lagos, where victims of the building collapse are receiving treatment. The school had more than 100 students, rescue officials said.

The dilapidated building in the densely-populated Lagos Island area suddenly collapsed on Wednesday morning.

The building, housing Ohen Private Nursery and Primary School on its third floor, caved in at about 10:20am, trapping scores of pupils.

A crowd of people who had already gathered at the scene were overjoyed to see the boy hale and hearty and they rejoiced in unison at his rescue.

"This incident has further highlighted the urgent need.to take urgent action on issues of safety in schools across the country", country director Hussaini Abdu said.

An inquiry found the building had been built illegally and had structural flaws. We all thought we were doing the best for them. "What we learnt was that some government officials, after the initial marking of the house for demolition, were compromised with bribes in their subsequent visit, otherwise the building ought to have been demolished a long time ago", Komolafe said.

"We equally told the state government to carry out integrity test on more structures in the area, but due to lack of political will, nothing was done by the government", pointing out that the incessant building collapses being recorded in Lagos Island, is due to the peculiarity of the local developers who are not professionals.

Onilenla said: "My friend has seven children also trapped in the rubble".
