Climate strike: School students from over 120 countries march to 'change history'

Greta Thunberg

The day of action is inspired by 16-year-old Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg, who hit global headlines after she held a solo protest outside her country's parliament every Friday last summer.

"That's why they need our support", he said.

The 62-year-old captioned the photo set: 'You know the world has changed coz (sic) we caught a train to join #ClimateStrike with the school kids, they were unbelievable'.

"There are a crisis in front of us that we have to live with, that we will have to live with for all our lives, our children, our grandchildren and all future generations", she said.

Another, directed at Alabama's pro-life legislators, read "You fight so hard for us to have babies". During the takeover, Guardian US will display its strongest recent climate change coverage from Guardian correspondents and columnists around the world.

Quaschning, one of more than 23,000 German-speaking scientists to sign a letter of support this week, said Germany should stop using all fossil fuels by 2040.

His friend Theo Parker-Banks, who also attends Langton Boys, said: "I think that the real problem is that young people aren't taken seriously by older politicians, and they're the people that we need to introduce changes".

Adults should listen to us because we are saying something that they have probably known about for a long time.

The strikes and rallies are scheduled in all but a few states (along with others around the world.) They come as public concern about climate change is up, apparently driven by more extreme weather events, and a series of reports on the increasingly dire consequences of the warming climate.

"Climate change is an alarm clock that's been going off, ignored by those in power for years", she said.

"We are living through an existential crisis that has been ignored for decades and if we do not act now it may be too late", said Thunberg, who has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for her activism.

I also hope we can show them that this is not just one day, not just one moment of solidarity. Yes we are failing but there is still time to turn everything around we can still fix this.

Hochman: We have 11 years left to really start changing things.

More than 1000 school pupils have turned out for the protest in Edinburgh.

She spoke at a Stockholm demonstration today, amid protests being held in 100 other Swedish towns.

Dan Tehan, Australia's education minister, said: "For action on issues that they think is important, they should do that after school or on weekends".

"I have a younger sister in junior high, and my mom has organized to bring my sister and a couple of her classmates down to the clock tower", says organizer Ivan Andreou. We'll be walking from the University of Malta to the Parliament building in Valletta, to raise awareness on our future and our planet!
