Australia's 2-year ODI losing streak ends in New Delhi

Usman Khawaja

"The World Cup is still pretty far away". He is unflappable against pace and spin alike.

It has been some turnaround for Khawaja, and you knew it meant so much to him when he emotionally celebrated his hundred that set the scene for Australia sewing up their first ODI series win in India in ten years. There are new games, new teams, new wickets.

The shot that brought up the landmark for Khawaja neatly summed up why he has been so successful this series.

But, Khawaja's departure to end the 33rd over - out to Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-48) - derailed the innings, the first of three wickets to fall for seven runs.

Always looking for a motivational edge, Australia coach Justin Langer asked his charges to cast their minds back to November as they prepared to face India in Delhi.

He had displayed similar assured technique against legspinner Yasir Shah and offspinners Bilal Asif and Mohammed Hafeez when he had helped Australia pull off a great escape in Dubai past year.

He was playing a different format in India, but the UAE lessons proved crucial. Anything that Jadeja tossed outside off was swept or reverse-swept with great authority.

Regardless, being a key player behind Australia's renewed optimism in ODI cricket is something the elegant left-hander will hold close as he and side travel to the UAE to take on Pakistan. "Well done Australia for winning the series", his post read.

"We were more courageous than them in the pressure situations in Australia", he said.

Australia won the fifth and final ODI by 35 runs in Delhi.

"To win this series, particularly after being 2-0 down, is a brilliant achievement.it means a lot to us". We are just going to enjoy this series win at the moment.

But Kohli said after Australia sealed the series on Wednesday: "None of the guys in the changing room are panicking, the support staff is not feeling down after this defeat".

"From a personal point of view it's huge".

Khawaja, who was named man of the series, said it was a sweet revenge after the home ODIs defeat to India early this year.

"Although he's recently gone through a real tough time, if he can get through the other side of that before the World Cup, it could be - as hard as it sounds on him - it nearly could be ideal timing", the 44-year-old added. He's now also the batsman to score most runs against India in a five-match ODI series against India. Then you have the conditions, then you have the crowds, so it's really satisfying to come back into the one-day side and contribute.

With the 50-over World Cup coming up in a a couple of months, Katich asserted that the Australians will have plenty of options whey they get down to the task of selecting the squad for the marquee tournament. "No one knows what the next day might bring".

"We did that for four of the five games and.to get over the line in three of them was a great series all round".
