House Votes Almost Unanimously For Public Release Of Mueller Report

The United States Capitol

The resolution, introduced last week by the heads of six House oversight committees that are investigating Trump, calls on Barr to make public everything in the Mueller report that is not expressly prohibited by law and to provide the entire document to Congress.

In an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote, the House of Representatives called Thursday for special counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election to be made public when it is completed.

The vote by the Democratic-controlled House put Republican lawmakers on record about support of broad disclosure of a report on an investigation that Trump has called a "witch hunt" led by "thugs".

The President has repeatedly railed against the investigation, denouncing it as a witch hunt and insisting there was no collusion between associates of his presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

The measure passed 420 to zero, with four members voting present. Peter Carr, a spokesman for Mueller, offered what many viewed as fresh evidence of an imminent conclusion Thursday when he confirmed that one of the special counsel's top prosecutors, Andrew Weissmann, will be departing the special counsel's office "in the near future".

"It is important that Congress stand up for the principle of full transparency".

The move is an attempt to "send a clear signal both to the American people and the Department of Justice" that lawmakers expect to see the full account of Mueller's work, according to the House Judiciary Committee's chairman, Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y.

"It's nothing but a restatement of the regulation", said Rep. Doug Collins, Georgia Republican. "Was there two systems of justice, one for the Democratic candidate, one for the Republican candidate?"

Barr said at his confirmation hearing in January that he takes seriously the department regulations that say Mueller's report should be confidential.

At the same time, an overwhelming majority of Americans believe there should be a public report on what Mueller finds.

"[Barr] understands the questions and turmoil this has caused", Collins said. Richard Blumenthal of CT that would require Mueller to submit a detailed report to lawmakers and the public at the end of the investigation.

House Democrats have threatened to use subpoena power to force the Justice Department to turn over anything Barr withholds.

Schumer added that he was "deeply disappointed" in Graham, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. Res. 24, legislation urging the public release of Special Counsel Mueller's report and underlying evidence.

"Andrew has been involved with NYU Law in the past and we have been talking with him about returning to the Law School following his current commitments", Orey said.
