At least two people were killed and dozens injured on Sunday (March 17) after an quake on the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok triggered a landslide, officials said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday it had received information from the Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta that the six Malaysian who were at the waterfalls were reported missing.

The quake, which struck at 2.07pm local time on Sunday caused a landslide that trapped about 40 tourists at the Tiu Kelep waterfall in Senaru Village, north of Lombok.

The bodies of the two deceased, identified as Tai Siew Kim and Lim Sai Wah, were recovered and returned on Sunday.

But state news agency Antara reported only one was a Malaysian national. Her son, who was with her, was slightly injured and is receiving treatment at a hospital.

"The Ministry would like to express its condolences to the victims and their families affected".

He said rescuers managed to evacuate 22 Malaysians and 14 Indonesians from the waterfall site, and 50 others - mostly local surveyors from government institutions, the military and the police - from the mountainous area.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was located around 24 km east of East Lombok District, 36 km northeast of North Lombok District, 37 km northwest of Panjang Island in Sumbawa District, and 63 km northeast of Mataram, the capital city of West Nusa Tenggara Province.

Last September, the country was hit by an natural disaster and tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island which killed around 2200 people.

The natural disaster was also believed to be 20km deep. More than 500 people were killed while more than 1,500 were injured during that disaster. We can not be sure yet, the evacuation is still underway.
