Bianca Andreescu ranked 24th in world after title victory at Indian Wells

Bianca Andreescu shocked herself with her stunning win

The 18-year-old pictured herself as the Indian Wells champion so many times during the tournament that actually winning it should have come as no great surprise but the Canadian wildcard was still stunned by Sunday's victory over Germany's Kerber. She reached No7, made her first Major quarter-final, and won the elite-level Toronto Premier while still a teenager.

Andreescu matched the performance of last year's champion, current World No.1 Naomi Osaka, by winning her first WTA singles title as an unseeded player at Indian Wells.

Thiem then seized his opportunity in the 11th game to go 6-5 up and served out the first of two championship points to clinch a maiden Indian Wells Open title in two hours and two minutes. At moments, her play was so capricious, it was as if she changed her mind midshot, suddenly solving the riddle of that particular point. I know I'm far, far, far away from that. "She is playing really hard and she is going for it", Kerber said.

The teen had three match points on her serve before trying one of her patented drop shots. "I don't like to focus on what just happened or in the future".

"After I spoke to my coach I just let it all out there", she said.

"It's been a insane ride", Andreescu said.

Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ont., earned US$1,354,010 million for the title. I'm working a lot on that and also in the gym, to being able to last long rallies and being able to have the strength to hit such heavy balls. "If you trust your shots, if you trust your game, good things always happen".

Andreescu, just 18, had finished previous year ranked near No. 200 in the world but stepped up her approach in the offseason by getting healthy and focusing on her mental game. This year, she has piled together a 28-3 record, with a finalist finish in Auckland and a WTA $125K Series title in Newport (those wins include qualifying and Fed Cup).

Metro UK tennis writer George Bellshaw tweeted about the "unbelievable scenes" of Andreescu breaking when it mattered most to go up 5-4 in the third and give her the chance to serve for the match, which she did - despite Kerber adding to the drama by saving three match points.

"It's insane to think that it became a reality today". "My feet were burning" exclaimed Andreescu when recalling what she had told her mentor who like any good teacher told his student to keep pushing forward.

WTA Insider: You started the season ranked No.152 and on Monday you will rise to No.24, a Top 25 player.

And while it seems nearly certain that Shapovalov and Auger-Aliassime will eventually become regular members of the top 10, it is Andreescu who has stolen a march over them by winning a big title first - despite being considerably less hyped than either.
