Christchurch survivor recalls how he grabbed gunman's rifle forcing him to flee

In total, the gunman's heinous actions took the lives of 50 people and injured another 50.

Brenton Tarrant, 28, appeared in court on Saturday charged with murder and was remanded until April 5.

Abdul Aziz describes how he picked up a gunman's discarded weapon and chased him with it outside the Linwood mosque in Christchurch.

Forty-eight-year-old Abdul Aziz is being called hero for his fearless actions during the Christchurch shooting at the Linwood Mosque last Friday.

By the time he attacked the Linwood mosque, the gunman had already killed dozens at the Al Noor mosque nearby, and on the streets.

"He had on army clothes", Aziz told Reuters on Sunday. "When he swore at me, I knew that he was not the good guy", Mr Aziz said in an interview.

Mr Aziz said it was at this moment he spotted a gun abandoned by the attacker, who had once again run back to his auto. Initially thinking someone was setting off firecrackers, Aziz became suspicious and ran out of the mosque, grabbing a small credit card processing device.

The hero said after seeing the attacker run back to his auto to get another guy, he threw the credit card machine at the gunman.

"I've been to a lot of countries and this is one of the lovely ones", he said, adding that he had always thought New Zealand was peaceful. Although the magazine of the weapon is empty, but Aziz throws the rifle short-hand like a spear on the windshield of Tarrant's auto. "He went after him, and he managed to overpower him, and that's how we were saved", Alabi said, referring to Aziz.

Aziz said four of his children were with him at the mosque when the attack occurred.

Nigerian, Alabi Lateef Zirullah, Linwood mosque Imam in Christchurch, New Zealand.

On hearing gunfire outside the mosque, Lateef allegedly screamed at worshipers to go down so as to take cover.

Aziz said when he came back to the mosque, everyone was frightened. "When glass got broken and the brother fell down, everyone realised to go down".

The decision to ground Boeing 737 Max 8 planes in Canada amid safety concerns is being felt at airports around the globe. These governments and airlines have suspended the use of the jets or banned them from entering their airspace.

He then walked back inside and started shooting again.

Amid the shock, outrage, and recriminations that have consumed New Zealand over the past two days, tales of heroism and self-sacrifice emerged.

They said Tarrant's family "continues to assist police with their inquiries" but that there is no information to suggest "a current or impending threat" to the community.

Tarrant had posted a muddled, 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto online before the attacks and apparently used a helmet-mounted camera to broadcast live video of the slaughter.

Under New Zealand's contempt rules, there are limits on what can be published about the suspect, to preserve his right to a fair trial.

Tarrant, a self-avowed white supremacist, spent his youth in Grafton but has travelled overseas extensively over the past decade and had lived in recent years in Dunedin, New Zealand.

More stories of heroes came to light as investigators pieced together the incident. Rashid's 21-year-old son, Talha, also lost his life during the mass shooting. She was among at least four women killed in the attack.

"The terrorist opened fire at us.Then he left", he said.

Yesterday, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that Rashid would be given a posthumous national award for bravery.

Sarah Liddell, 17, said many of her peers felt intense anxiety since the attack.

When the gunman advanced toward the mosque, killing those in his path, Abdul Aziz didn't hide.

"The MSSA, military-style automatic, reportedly used by the alleged gunman was not purchased from Gun City".

He went back to his vehicle to reload, then returned to the mosque to kill more people.
