Erdogan shows Christchurch terror footage at election rally

The gunman shot dead 50 people and wounded more than 40 in Christchurch on Friday, broadcasting footage of the attack on one of the mosques on Facebook.

The war of words between Turkey and Israel continued Friday when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan rebuked the son of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for suggesting that Istanbul - formerly Constantinople - was under Turkish occupation.

At weekend election rallies Erdogan showed video footage of the shootings, which the gunman had broadcast on Facebook, earning a rebuke from New Zealand's foreign minister who said it could endanger New Zealanders overseas.

Peters told reporters that the message he gave to Turkish officials was "that anything of that nature that misrepresents this country - given that this was a non-New Zealand citizen - imperils the future and safety of the New Zealand people and our people overseas, and it's totally unfair".

He has said the gunman issued threats against Turkey and the president himself, and wanted to drive Turks from Turkey's northwestern, European region.

"We do not want to see a cross and crescent conflict again", Erdogan said in a reference to Christians and Muslims.

He said: 'The wicked person who martyred 49 brothers and sisters is saying that we can stay on the [Asian] side, we cannot pass to the European side. He was referring to comments by Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the head of Turkey's main opposition party, who said in a recent speech that the Islamic world "needs to sit and think: Why is there terror in my country?"

Erdogan stressed that the Turkish authorities are well aware of what and when to do.

The shooter, who horrifically killed men, women, and young children as they peacefully prayed, has been identified as 28-year-old Australian citizen Brenton Harrison Tarrant, who has since been charged with murder.

The delegation from Turkey, a Muslim-majority country, has arrived to show their support to Muslims, she said.

"We are coming for Constantinople and we will destroy every mosque and minaret in the city", Tarrant wrote, referring to Istanbul and claiming the city will be "rightfully Christian-owned once more".

Oktay said terror and terrorists have "no religion, no race, and no geography".
