Shooting livestreams a new rage on social media

A video of the massacre was uploaded to Facebook by the alleged gunman

More than 1.2 million of the total 1.5 million videos of the mass shooting were blocked at upload.

In the aftermath of the New Zealand mosque shooting, which was streamed live on Facebook, the social media company has said it removed 1.5 million videos of the attack from its site.

The gunman who opened fire inside at one of the New Zealand mosques appeared to live-stream his attack on Facebook in a video that looked to be recorded on a helmet camera.

"New Zealand Police alerted us to a video on Facebook shortly after the livestream commenced and we quickly removed both the shooter's Facebook and Instagram accounts and the video", Mia Garlick, Facebook's director of policy for Australia and New Zealand, said in a statement on Friday after the shootings. "We are working with social media platforms, who are actively removing this content as soon as they are made aware of an instance of it being posted".

New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern have repeatedly urged citizens and the media not to share footage of the attack. Hours after the shooting, the social media platform, as well as Twitter and YouTube were still removing copies of the footage.

Ardern said New Zealand authorities and businesses did as much as they could to seek to have removed some of the footage, but ultimately it was up to those platforms to facilitate and support the removal.

"If we can cut down the messenger, we can we can put strict regulations on these big social media sites once they reach a certain membership this can have a big impact on actually limiting you know all of this". "What's going on here?" she said, referring to the shooter's ability to livestream for 17 minutes.

Trump uses veto power to overturn congressional resolution
Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi said her chamber would vote on March 26 to override the veto. Ahead of the voting, Trump framed the issue as with-him-or-against-him on border security, a powerful argument with many.

Their response has been widely condemned, with Home Secretary Sajid Javid saying "enough is enough" and accusing YouTube, Google, Facebook and Twitter of not taking ownership of this content being shared on their networks.

"I do think there are further questions to be answered".

"Just heard news of the devastating reports from New Zealand Christchurch", he wrote on his Twitter account.

A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "They have taken action to take it down and we are clear that all companies need to act more quickly to remove terrorist content".

In the United States, those sites have also been criticised for spreading political misinformation, with Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg being called before Congress.

In the meantime, he says, New Zealand's brands do have the power to choose where they would like to put their money.

Jacqueline Helfgott, a professor of criminal justice at Seattle University, said that for some, social media can be a motivator when it comes to committing a crime.

Often, social media platforms struggle to contain the content online, particularly in real time.
