Two US servicemembers killed in Afghanistan

Two US service members were killed in Afghanistan on Friday, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said.

Last week, relations between Washington and Kabul hit a new low when Afghanistan's national security adviser, Hamidullah Mohib, charged that any USA deal with the Taliban would "sell out" his country and "dishonor" American troops who fought and died in the conflict.

'In accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the name of the service members killed in action are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete, ' said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

The statement did not provide details on the location of combat or on what led up to the deaths.

Violence has persisted in Afghanistan even as Taliban militants have held negotiations with USA officials about a peace settlement.

Following the talks, held in Qatar where the Taliban maintain an office, Khalilzad said the two sides reached two "draft agreements" covering the withdrawal of US troops and guarantees that Afghanistan would not revert to a haven for terrorists.

Despite the negotiations, the country is more unsafe than ever.

President Donald Trump is now planning to withdraw at least half of the 14,000 troops that remain in Afghanistan, which represent the majority of NATO's force. The Taliban have consistently refused to talk with the government in Kabul, describing it as a USA puppet.

Last year, 13 US service members were killed in Afghanistan.

Fighting continues across Afghanistan more than a week after the latest round of negotiations between the United States and the Taliban ended in Qatar, as Washington seeks an end to the almost 18-year war. In exchange, the USA would agree to withdrawing forces.

Despite the talks, Afghanistan is suffering from crippling violence, with a record number of civilian casualties past year.
